I can’t believe how the world follows American Idol, but on the other hand, I guess I can. I won’t comment on American Idol at all, but I would like to talk about Simon for a minute. I have decided that there are a lot of “Simons” in our churches. Maybe Simon has given people in the pew too much wrongfully-based courage to pop off at everything that happens on our platforms – correlating worship to an American Idol-type image or something. I recently was told a story that during a time of greeting during a church service, a worship leader came off the platform to shake hands with a congregant. The congregant’s first words to him were critical of the shirt he was wearing! Now, I do think we maybe should discuss the attire issue for worship leaders – since it really is an issue – but this lady…really? Where is her head? Instead of a sacrifice of praise, she decided to sacrifice the worship leader…right or wrong about the shirt. Think about it for a minute. After getting criticized for his shirt, he had to go back onto the platform and continue to guide people along their worship path for that day while thinking about that lady’s attitude – and his shirt! He shouldn’t have to do that. I will say that every worship leader is a target for the Simon Cowells in our congregations. They may be correct in certain assessments, but where do people have the right to hurt and wound people like that?
